Reading Middle English
At some point I hope to read The Canterbury Tales in the original middle English. There is just something enchanting about the language – it feels comprehensible while being just out of reach:
Ther n’ is no werkman whatever he be,
That may both werken wel and hastily.
This wol be done at leisure parfitly.
- The Marchantes Tale, line 585
It's going to be no easy task, Shakespeare is hard enough. But reading and understanding small bits seems doable with patience and a good dictionary.
