Light Reading Recommendations

When I'm going to bed or otherwise want to relax I find light reading helps a lot. Here are a few of my favourites:

  • Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome
    • Written in the late 19th-century but still amusing to read today.
  • Neither Here nor There by Bill Bryson
    • Travel writer Bill Bryson's account of his travels in Europe is hilarious, easily the funniest of his books in my opinion.
  • Notes From a Small Island by Bill Bryson
    • Probably Bryson's most well-known book. Chronicles his travels in Britain. Very funny but I enjoyed Neither Here nor There more.
  • Afloat: A Memoir by Danie Couchman
    • A woman's memoir of spending five years living on a narrowboat in London's canals.
  • Rig Ship for Ultra Quiet by Andrew Karam
    • About life on a nuclear submarine during the cold war. It's a light read as it focuses on the day-to-day life of submariners rather than on military operations -- what the food is like, what kinds of jobs people do, what the sleeping arrangements are, and so on.
